Database input format reference ?

Is there are reference document that describes the preferred format for data to be imported as to ensure the object relationships are maintained?

For example, if I have an Oracle database that contains three tables for objects (contacts, groups, companies) and an associated set of relation tables ("contact_group", "contact_company", etc) that define which objects belong to which other objects, what would be the preferred method to capture this information in, say, a set of CSV files?

You should be able to import contacts, groups, and companies from a CSV file, but you will not able to import the contact's group/company association. You may want to take at this addon product - Import IT.
