Database conversion

We are using ACT for WOrkgroups 7.0  Our database has dissappeared.  We see the .alf file but now .pad file.

Can I use the .alf file as my database since it is a form of backup.  How can I covert it to a .pad file.

Please help.  Desparate.

Re: Database conversion

Look for the .adf file.  You don't need the pad.  Once you find this, you can choose File, Open and change .pad to .adf at the bottom of the window.

Best guess, your act database didn't just disapear, someone tried to move it without first detaching from Sql.  This will not grab the key .adf file and leave you with a worthless backup.  Hope this is not the case.

Re: Database conversion

I would like to move my database.

How do I detach the database from SQL?

Re: Database conversion

Go to Start, Run, ACT Diag, Choose the Database tab.  Find and right click on your database, select detach database.

Move the .adf, the .alf and the supplemtal files folder to the new machine.

Open ACT, shoose File, Open - change files of type from .pad to .adf and open the database. This will create a new pad file.

Make sure the versions and version numbers of ACT on both machines (Help,About) are the same.
