Creating a lookup from a keyword search works fine, if you do it correctly.
The"problem" is that the latest version of ACT! searches much more than just contacts - it includes opportunities, groups. etc. So if you choose to do a keyword search that includes all of those different things, of course you cannot create a lookup - because some are contacts, some are groups, etc.
To make it work, simply select "contacts" from the "Search these records" box rather than the default "All". Do your search, then click "Create lookup" and it will work fine.

Got it!! This works. Love my new SSD drive. Created a keyword lookup against almost 20k contacts and 523 results came up in less than a minute
Now I just have to remember to make that change on every keyword search...
