This thread is a perfect example of why we created Outlook IntegrateR1. Our tool lets you pick and choose which emails to attach as well as provide several other advanced features.

Thanks for all the input.
FYI - We are a small 3 user office, so not a lot of activity. We support local business with the computers, so our technicians are always out in the field and they don't use ACT. We just like the central location for ALL of our contacts, clients, vendors, prospects, resources, etc.
Only one user (me) was set to save attachments, just as a test.
We went from 40MB on 3/7 to 46MB on 3/21. A backup without attachments is 45MB. And there were only 20 attachment files ranging from 9kb to 570kb (that had a word doc attached) - average 15kb each.
I've now removed them all now along with email historys for all but the handful we would want to keep (used the History Summary report). A full backup is still at 45MB.
We are probably going to manually attach emails with message (no att) on an as needed basis to avoid cluttering the histories with irrelevant banter with our contacts.

Just saw this thread...if you haven't resolved this yet...
We had the same issue here. Small office. Wanted to control what emails attached & the records to which they were attached. I hope you tried DesignR1's Add-on because that's what worked for us. Good luck.
