Contact Field Lookup can't ignore middle name? Really?

Hello,

I use the little edit box in the navigation pane to search for Contact names (which I do all day long), ACT! doesn't seem to find "Joe Smith," when he is listed in the database as "Joe L. Smith."  So, I always have to search for Smith and then scan a list of a million contacts for Joe.

Am I doing something wrong?  I didn't expect ACT! to do an approximate ("sounds like" search); I was a little surprised that ACT! cannot search for regular expressions, or even do a boolean search; but this seems like something ACT! would do right.

TIA

Thanks.

I'm not sure I understand.  I'm using the default lookup: Contact contains... Search for Contacts, replace lookup

Contains by definition looks for a specific contigous string anywhere in the field there for it would not find John Smith if the field contains John W. Smith. However a fuzzy search might find it.

Can ACT! do a fuzzy search from the navigation pane?

No but that would be a very good feature request. Fuzzy searches are very good for certain things, especially for duplicate checking.
