Client Start & Stop and Skills

I have a client which places technical engineers either on a project or fulltime basis. I'm looking for a suggestion on handling two areas: 1. How to handle the myriad of skills that an individual may have that can also be used for a search when matching the engineer with an open opportunity. 2. Best way to track employment to include start & end date with number of days (or years). I'm thinking the opportunity function is the best, but I am certainly open for a better suggestion.

You might be able to make a force fit with opportunities but my choice would be a custom table.
