Chanding field names & contents

I have just loaded ACT 2008 and am building a new database.  I would like to change the Contact field to First Name and create a new category for the Last Name.  I have done this, however when I exit back out into the regular view...ACT has grayed those two fields out and won't let me enter anything into those fields.  It automatically skips those fields and goes to the next field.  Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I have read the ACT user guide, however just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.  I need it to be First Name and Last Name because that is how the data is that I'm planning to import.

Please help!

You may need to start over with a new database. That will likely be easier than trying to fix your present database. The ACT! program parses the name you put into the contact field into a first name and last name system fields. Data can't be directly entered in those fields but during import you can map separately to the first name and the last name fields.
