Cannot Restore ACT! Database - Need Help ASAP

I backed up database and personal files then formatted my HD.  Then tried to reinstall the backup on same laptop;I read the post with the instructions and still cant restore the database or personal files.

 

Am using Vista(ugh) and ACT 2008 V.10

 

Any help is appreciated.

hi jeff

thanks for your response...unfortunately it didnt work...i am an admin on my laptop but did try it as you specified.....

i SOMEHOW was able to load most, not all of my ACT info to a new reinstallation....but now i cant get anything to restore...the message i get is that there are no backup files on what i'm installing from....

 

FYI the files were saved on a DVD

when i backed up, it prompted me to backup a Database AND Personal Files....i restored both 

 

again, any help is appreciated...

Are you getting an error message?

 

In the meantime try this.  Close ACT. Now right click on the ACT by Sage icon (the one you use to open ACT) then click Run As Adminitrator to open ACT. Try and restore the database again.

Not quite sute what you mean by "was able to load most, not all of my ACT info to a new reinstallation".

 

Just a thought, have you tried copying the backup file from the DVD to your hard drive before attempting to restore? If you do this also check that the zip file is not marked as Read Only.

hi jeff

what i meant was that when i restored previously,

  • i think that most, not all of my contacts were restored
  • only a few of my calander items were restored
  • was unable to resotr any Personal files.

i tried what you suggested, but the files/folders do not appear as zip files on the desktop.

 

problem is i cant remember how i got the previous restoral to work, so i'm back to having nothing...

Going back to your original post, when you said you did a backup before reformatting your hard drive, did you do an ACT! backup from within ACT! (File | Backup | Database)?

 

If you did you would have created a zip file.  This is the file you need to restore your database. Do you have this?

yes i know what you mean and i thought that i followed this to the letter.....

i backup up

copied to DVD

reloaded vista on laptop

installed ACT

tcopied backed up files to desktop

open ACT

go to file l restore l database l then populate "restore database" popup box l select the restror use a backup file to recreate a database

when i "browse" that file is not seen as a zip file. I see that the file is 18k so i KNOW that this is what i'm looking for,,,

whnever i click on proprties i have to remove "read only" when i go back to same file the "read only is poulated again......

 

your thoughts?

Copy the ACT backup zip file to your hard drive, then, in File Properties uncheck Read Only. Then try the restore again.

 

CDs / DVDs often force all files to be read only.

didnt have to uncheck "read only" it was already unchecked.......

still same results .....says doesnt contain backup files

 

should i try extracting files?...if i did that i wouldnt know what to do after..

What did you mean by "when i "browse" that file is not seen as a zip file"?

 

It's sounding as if your original backup is corrupt in some way.
