Cannot Rename Database - Error: Database Already Exists

Because of a problem accessing my database, I manually deleted the ACT! files referring to it.  I was able to restore a previous copy, but it is under a different name.  When I try to "save as" to rename it to the deleted database name, I get an error that says "Database Already Exists" "A database with the specified name already exists.  Please specify a unique name."  I have removed all references to the original database, including the registry entries, but still cannot use the original database name.  How can I overwrite the previous (deleted) ACT! database or remove the reference that is locking this particular name?

Re: Cannot Rename Database - Error: Database Already Exists

Manually deleting the database files doesn't remove the internal references in the SQQL server. If the database still shows in ACTdiag you should be able to do the delete there and have the SQL references removed.

Re: Cannot Rename Database - Error: Database Already Exists

I have manually deleted the database and it does not show up in ActDiag.

However, when I try to attach a new database with the same name (transported from another  machine), I get the following error

'XXXXX already exists. Choose a different database name there is already a ...."

It seems like the SQL reference is not removed, although database files are not there and the DB is not listed in ActDiag.

It's messy ...
The database information is maintained by sql server express. So just deleting the file doesn't remove the database from sql server. You need to detach the database. Try sql server management studio express

I feared it would have been messy, I'll now give it a try.

Thanks for the help

Re: Cannot Rename Database - Error: Database Already Exists

Sorry to bother again Mike, but I installed sql server management studio express and I do not have the credentials to access the SQL server from ACT (which I can correctly see).

Am I allowed to access the database directly? I am running ACT Pro 2012 SP1, Hotfix 6
