Can't open Act! Sage

I haven't had access to my pc in quite a few months and have today tried to open Act! with a couple of errors:

1. Out of memory

2. Object reference not set to an instance of an object... once I click that one sage closes.

The database has minimal information in it so far with regards to size.

Any help, pointers, tips would be appreciated

Re: Can't open Act! Sage

Please provide some additional information about the issue:

1. Operating system?

2. How much memory is on the computer?

2. Version of ACT!?

3. At what point in launching are you receiving the first error?  Can you provide the text of the error?

Re: Can't open Act! Sage

Please provide some additional information about the issue:

1. Operating system? - Windows 7 (x64)

2. How much memory is on the computer? 4gb Ram

2. Version of ACT!? 2010.2

3. At what point in launching are you receiving the first error? As soon as the ACT! program launches the error message comes up, so I can see the application page but the error message comes up before I can click on anything else.

* Just a few extra bits to add, I have followed a thread on here explaining how to increase the memory which I did but nothing changed and the errors still appear.

** I also found a virus on the computer which I believe is known as the Police virus, changing all image file names to have the extention .police.  I've followed instructions online re this also and the virus no longer shows up in viral scans.

With the above in mind, does anyone have any pointers as to how I can regain access to Act!

Also, since I can't load up the program to do a back up... if I copy the database folder from users/name/documents/act...  to another location, re install act! would I be able to open the databases from the copied folder ?

Thanks in advance

Re: Can't open Act! Sage

The 'Out of memory' message is odd, but here are a couple of things to try:

1. Compatibility mode:

  - right click on ACT! icon > select Properties

  - select Compatibility tab > enable 'Compatiblity' > select Windows XP SP3

  - click OK

  - double click on ACT! icon to open

If not successful

2. Delete Sage ACT! Preferences

  - See the following article, section 'Alternate Method: Manually Rebuild Preferences': KB Article 14770

Are there any messages in the Windows Event Viewer associated with the opening of ACT!?

To copy the database to a different location, you will need to:

- click Windows Start > enter 'Actdiag' in the Search field > press ENTER

- click Databases > Database List

- left click database name to highlight > right click to get menu > select Detach database (this detaches database from SQL)

- now you can copy the database files to a different folder

- delete the PAD file associated with the database from both locations (it will be recreated later)

- open ACT! > message: 'Last opened database could not be found'

- browse to new location > change 'Files of type' to ADF > select ADF > open
