Can someone explain what the document tab actually does?

I see that putting things in the document tab copies them into the Attachments directory and re-names the document by adding the contact or company ID if the name is duplicated in the directory.  (1) I cannot understand why this causes memory problems when more than a few documents are held in a single contact or company. (2) I also do not know how to find out which documents are associated with which companies or contacts for those companies and contacts that cause memory problems.
