I see where i can put customer's name and address, i also need somewhere to put policy effective date, policy number etc.
How can i add this information? And can i do a custom search to see what policies are about to expire etc?

You can add this information by creating custom fields.

You may want to consult with an ACT! Certified Consultant, as they will be able to help ensure you collect the right information in the best way so that it is usable in the ACT! Templates, Dynamic Groups etc.
