Nowhere until you add it to a layout.

How do you add it to the layout?

From the Tools menu, select Design Layouts and the layout type (Contacts?) to which you would like to add your new field.. You'll be in layout design mode and from there you can add your newly created field to the desired location on the form/layout.

Re: After your add a new field, where does it display?

Okay, I understand I need to add it to the layout field but can I rename a field in the top half of the contact detail page? I would like to add ssn, dob and owner somewhere, preferably the top half. If not, I have tried renaming the user fields by following the directions but I am doing something wrong. I go into define fields and pick user 1 and rename it ssn. I dont see ssn as a field anywhere. What am I doing wrong? Thanks. I am brand new to this and trying to use an ACT for Dummies book but it is still confusing.

You won't see ssn as a field anywhere until you add it to a layout.

So, if you rename user 1 to ssn, for example, that field won't appear anywhere until you put it on a layout using the Layout Designer (Tools|Design Layouts).  The field user 1 would normally appear under the User Fields tab, but you deleted it when you renamed it (I think).

dob can be found under the Personal Info tab. I believe that they can only appear once on a layout, so if you want to put it in the top section, then you have to remove it from the Personal Info tab portion of the layout.

I hope this helps a bit.
