Is it possible to add a group column to the contact view list so that contacts could be quickly added or removed using the edit function in the contact list view?
If not, any other suggestions to make this task less cumbersome would be greatly appreciated.

I am not saying to not use the Groups module of ACT!, but you can easily
create new Group Field with Multi select Dropdown.
Then place it on your main screen layout area,
then in list view, customize your column view to include that field
You can also utilize the Lookup Groups options and possibly Saving your Group Lookups/Queries that you may be using frequently
and then adding your Saved Queries to your Custom Comands Toolbar
so that you can just Single Click on Command to run desired Group Lookup Query.
