Act 2009 / 2010 compatability

Disclaimer - I know very little about ACT!

I have a client that wants to add a new pc in their office specifically to run as a server for ACT.  Their current machines run ACT 2009 on Windows Vista 64.  I have a few questions about ACT before I advise them on what to buy.

Does ACT need to run on the server system or does it just need Microsoft SQL Server?

If the server needs ACT can the new machine run ACT 2010 and still function with the ACT 2009 machines?  I'm asking this since I see ACT 2009 isn't supported for Windows 7.

If not can I run ACT 2009 in a VM or in XP Mode on the server?

ACT! needs to run on the server.

ALL systems sharing the same database need to use the same version of ACT!

Yes, you can run ACT! in a VM

Thanks for the quick reply.

I thought of another question.

Does the server machine also need to run have MS Office on it?
