I've been helping a buddy of mine with his conversion of everything to a new machine. We've been stumped by the conversion of his data for Act over to the new version on his new laptop.
Essentially when trying to convert the backup file on the new machine, it hangs for hours.
I'd been searching and reading on several different posts here that it's likely a SQL version issue.
1) Can we download a slightly newer version onto his older laptop that would allow us to upgrade the backup file enough to then create a backup file that we could up convert on the new machine with v18?
2) If so, can someone point us in the right direction or provide a link to it? He said he has only the 1 license for the new machine, and obviously he has a license for the 2006 version (v 8 I believe). How would that all work with licensing (maybe a trial version?) if we just need it to help with the conversion?
Thanks in advance!

1. Yes but consider the Act! Compatibility Matrix - http://kb.act.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29767
2. Fully functional trial version - 30 days
V18 Premium... http://www.act.com/download/download-act!-premium-v18
Recommendation: When you start the conversion, do it as Custom conversion
BEFORE CONVERTING YOUR DATABASE:
Recommendation: backup your old database in your old version of ACT! - Copy the ZIP file to a USB stick or external drive for more security.
After installing the new Act! version - open ACT! V18, select Open Database, change the File Type to .DBF, browse to the folder you extracted the backup files to, and open the .DBF file for conversion.
