Access Data Base integration

We're currently using Microsoft Access to manage 23,000 contacts and their 150,000 or so transactions.  Our analysis of Act suggests that it can handle the contact information well but our concern is how to link / attach or otherwise maintain the relationship between each contact and their transactions.  The transactions are orders and suborder delivery dates.  Knowing that there's a database behind ACT my question is how accessable is that database and am I correct in assuming that whatever has been possible through a standalone Access database is possible with the Act database?  Thanks!

Re: Access Data Base integration

It really depends on what sort of transactions... are you referring to historical transactions that could be imported into ACT!'s History table?

If so, you could use itImport to bring the access data into ACT! and maintain the links - it can import directly from the Access tables.

We'll have both history to bring over as well as ongoing entry of new transactions.  Ongoing entry also requires being to extract transactions in both file format and printed copies.  Probably 2,000 transactions per week.

You need to look at version 10.0.2. It has the capability of allowing adding custom tables to the ACT! database through the SDK. There are several add-ons that automate the process of creating and managing the custom tables. Further these tables are available externally via OLEDB.

itImport has an optional extra that can run it as a servvice. It can be set to run each day and merge in new contacts and/or hitory/notes transactions (or additional tables if you need them, but it doesn't sound like it) from the Access database

So the database is not real time?  Assumed that the database would be part of the Act application and we could enter and maintain directly from the contact records, in real time.

ACT! uses a SQL database. Aren't you talking about bringing data in from an external Access database?

If you wanted that to be done in real time, it could be done with the SDK.

Re: Access Data Base integration

We initially need to bring over a large amount of historical data but more importantly need the ability to enter current real time data in and have it exportable and reportable.  This data is for product orders and delivery dates.  SDK is software developement software?  Guess my question is whether the application has the ability to receive data, store it and export it without a lot of add-ons.

Re: Access Data Base integration

Receive data from what? How? What types of data?

You can enter real-time into ACT!... but it entering into Access, you'd need to create a link between the two systems.

Re: Access Data Base integration

Receive via operators entering into act (understand there is the ability to add fields / tabs).  Data will be text, dates and prices.  So Joe Smith orders widget xyz to be delivered 20 units on 8/1/2008, 35 units on 9/3/2008 and 65 units on 12/2/2008, all at $4.43.  Basically we need that data entered and we then need the ability to export the data into Excel, CSV or something and get a hard copy report on it.

The initial idea was to maintain our Access DB and simply link ACT and Access, but entering thru ACT and having the data maintained therein is preferable.

Thanks for your patience if my getting this explained.
