I have using ACT since 1995 and today I am ready to throw this machine out the window. For no reason after using ACT 2008 v.10 for Real Estate for the past 4 months, it is giving me an error "This Contact no longer exists in the Database" when I try to edit a contact record. It makes the entire database frozen and will not accept new contacts nor allow me to edit any contact.
I have uninstalled the software 3 times, backed up the database 5 times to restore to a new name and no change.
I have taken advantage of the layout design to customize my layout and I have created new fields to better suit my business. I use Windows XP and have disabled McAfee. I do not want to recreate my database as I have 684 contacts with lots of details.

Have you tried database maintenance (Tools -> Database Maintenance -> ...)?
There's also the actdiag.exe tool in the Act program folder that has even more database recovery tools.
