A sales rep told me that Sage ACT! could handle 500,000 records, but I've been having nothing but problems with only 50,000 records. The records keep disappearing. What's going on and how can I fix it? This is a serious integrity issue.

What version of ACT! are you using?
There are certainly implementations out there that have 500,000 contacts, but very likely they would be running on ACT! premium using Microsoft SQL Server Standard.
Have you tried running the Check and Repair function from Tools, Database Maintenance?

Is this a single user database?
Is your ACT! upgraded from a previous version?
Did you try the check and repair? If so, did it say that it found/fixed errors?
How did the 50,000 contacts get introduced/imported into the database?
Are you performing recurring imports?
Are you using sync?

Ok - so is it during the import that contact records are "disappearing"? In other words, you have 50k records in the source, but you are only getting 45k in ACT! after it is done...?
That is very much different than having an actual 50k record ACT! database that today has 50k and then tomorrow, for not apparent reason has 49k...
For imports that first thing you want to look at is the duplicate checking settings in ACT! - very likely your records are getting merged because of the way the settings are. This is in the ACT! preferences area of the program from the tools menu.

Thank you for your time Scott. Actually, I had 50K after import. And then I had zero after I switched between windows. I was able to recover the 50k when I restored a backup though.
