ACT V6 to V12 To V20

I have spent the better part of 2 hours on hold with various ACT locations including India and no one can answer this very simple question: Can a BU in Act 6 be restored into ACT 12 then backed up and restored into ACT 20?  My goal is to get V6 to V20 including all tasks and notes.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks.

You can't restore an ACT! 6 database to ACT! 12. What you need to do is unZIP the ACT! 6 backup file and then open the ACT! 6 DBF file in ACT! 12 and go through the conversion. Then you can upgrade to ACT! 20 and the ACT! 12 database will be automatically converted.

Thank you Roy.

That was my plan, however ACT12 and 20 are on two separate machines. So the next Q is; When 12 is backed up and I transfer that BU to the V20 machine, will V20 convert  it?

No problem. When you move the V12 backup to the V20 machine do a Restore As on the V20 machine. You will need to five the database a new name.

One more Q for you Roy.

Prior to Installing V12 in the machine with V6, do I completely uninstall V6, or will V12 just overwrite it.

Thanks in Advance

Thank you for all your help Roy. You did in a couple responses, what the entire Swiftpage corp and India tech specialists could not do in 3 hours.

My new Q is simple:  Can I take a random record and make it the "my record" database manager?  Actually if I had the unlock code to SQL database I'd do it myself.

Much depends on whether you have a single license or two or more licenses because ACT! is licensed to the user. If you have multiple licenses just login as the administrator, go to tools |manage users, disable a user if necessary to free up a licenses if necessary and then create the new user. I've never had to change the user in a single user database but I believe there is a procedure. Check the Knowledge base at http://kb.act.com/ This article would be a good place to start http://kb.act.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/19474/kw/change%20user
