ACT! 2011 Will Not Start Up

When I click on the desktop icon or the exe file in Windows explorer, nothing happens. I do not get an error messge or anything. I am familiar with SQL Server issues and this is not it. And I double checked to make sure the SQL Server was running. I also deleted all preferences through the ActDiag Program. I also uninstalled and reinstalled the program but nothing has changed. ACT! 2011 will not open. I have not done anything different. I have a few month old Dell 2 in 1 that ACT! 2011 was working perfectly on until yesterday morning. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Re: ACT! 2011 Will Not Start Up

I just had a Chat Session with AVG Tech Support. They listed all of the files that need to have an exception created for them in AVG so that ACT! 2011 will open properly. My ACT! 2011 is working fine now.

Open AVG and go to Options (top Right)

In the options PopUp, Scroll down to and Click on Advanced Settings,

In the Advanced Settings Window, scroll down to and click on Exceptions,

Click on the Add Exception button:

(There will be 5 exceptions created) After clicking on the Add Exception Button, a new window opens and asks for exception type.

Exception 1:

Exception Type;  Application or File

Browse To: C:\Program Files (x86)\ACT\Act for Windows\Act.Scheduler.exe

Do not check anything under "Ignore This File:"

Check All under "Use This Exception For:"

Exception 2:

Exception Type;  Folder

Browse To:C:\Program Files (x86)\ACT\Act for Windows\

Check All under "Use This Exception For:"

Exception 3:

Exception Type;  Application or File

Browse To: C:\Program Files (x86)\ACT\Act for Windows\ActSage.exe

Under "Ignore This File:", Check "Even when this file is moved to a new location."

Check All under "Use This Exception For:"

Exception 4:

Exception Type;  Application or File

Browse To: C:\Program Files (x86)\ACT\Act for Windows\ActEmail.exe

Under "Ignore This File:", Check "Even when this file is moved to a new location."

Check All under "Use This Exception For:"

Exception 5:

Exception Type;  Application or File

Browse To: C:\Program Files (x86)\ACT\Act for Windows\Act.Outlook.Service.exe

Under "Ignore This File:", Check "Even when this file is moved to a new location."

Check All under "Use This Exception For:"

I hope this helps!

Re: ACT! 2011 Will Not Start Up

Hi,

Sorry to hear that Act! isn't opening. We want to help solve this error for you but need a bit more info.

Do you have AVG?

Can you chekc if act.exe is running in your task manager?

Thank you.

Brittany

Re: ACT! 2011 Will Not Start Up

No, it is not running in my task manager. I forgot to mention that I had checked that.

But, what I had not checked was AVG. I have used AVG...FOREVER...or at least for a very long time along with ACT! and on other programs I might have just installed, I would have checked that. But, I didn't for this issue but as soon as I read your post, I realized that was something I didn't check and I should have because I did an update to AVG just the other day that required a restart.

I temporarily disabled AVG and tried starting ACT! and guess what...it opened. Thanks!!!

Thank you so much for your incredibly fast response to my question. What made you ask about AVG specifically instead of some other antivirus software?

Re: ACT! 2011 Will Not Start Up

Hi,

This error started occuring with the most recent update to AVG, thought it would be a good first stop.

Thank you,

Brittany

Re: ACT! 2011 Will Not Start Up

Oh OK, I am no longer in front of my computer but just to make sure so when I do get back, I'm guessing that the fix is to go into the AVG settings and set up ACT! as an allowed program instead of temporarily disabling AVG all the time?

OK, sounds great. Thanks!

It will be a few hours before I get back in front of my computer but is there anything I can do to test/help?
