ACT! 2010 drop-down menus

I created a custom contact field a couple of years ago called "Business Type." Unfortunately, I never thought to make it a drop down menu, so there are various types of entries. Of the nearly 12,000 entries in our database, only 1200 show data in the "Business type" field.

Is there a way to change the Business Type field to a drop down menu even though several contacts contain data in that field?

You don't have to change it, just create a dropdown list from Tools/Define Fields, add your existing values to the dropdown, then associate that dropdown list with the field. Be sure to backup your database first as a precaution
