I have 5 different databases in ACT 2009. The largest has over 2000 contacts. The large database takes forever to open and move from tool to tool. I have it installed with Windows XP. I have been using ACT for 20 years and never experienced this problem.
Has anyone had this problem and how did you solve it?

Is this the only database that is slow?
If so, you should run maintenance on the database and consider purging some of the older data, such as cleared activities.
Take a look at the following kb article, specifically, the Preventative Maintenance section.
