ACT! 17 Quit Working

[ Edited ]
Win10 with Feb Update. Had been working fine. Started ACT!; get to Logon complete and programs hangs. Windows Event Viewer just says the program stopped, no other useful info. Uninstall; delete or rename all ACT! folders, uninstall SQLServer. Do a complete reinstall. Same thing. ESET Virus turned off. . . Any thoughts?? ETA: Found it does start -- but VERRRRYY slowly -- about 1 minute from "Logon Competed" to home screen. Same problem on laptop running Win 7.

Try editing the act!.exe.config file and change all occurrences of sageact.sageconnectedservices.com to 127.0.0.1 and then restart Act! and see if it helps.

No instances of sageconnectedservices.com

If this solution is tried be sure your hosts files has 127.0.0.1 un-commented. . .

Re: ACT! 17 Quit Working

I've seen that problem recently.  I think it was a permission issue with the folder that the Act! database was in or the parent folder of that folder.  Add "everyone" to the permissions of the parent folder to the folder Act! is in and tell it to put "everyone" on the child folders and files if it isn't set to do that already.

Re: ACT! 17 Quit Working

Thanks -- "everyone" already has full permissions. . .

Any other ideas? This started "spontaneously about 4:45. Had it open earlier in the day and all was normal.

Also the fact that there's a new delay of the same sort on my laptop. Hadn't used it for about a week; turned it on this morning and had about a 30 second delay behaving the same. Hangs at the "Logon Complete" notification. . .

I'd say since it happens to two different installations (and started at the same time)  it has something to do with the server end of Protexis; but I have no way to confirm

Re: ACT! 17 Quit Working

It could be that you are blocking the IP addresses that Act! uses to check and see if it is registered with Protexis.  You can determine what it is doing using a program like Fiddler if that is the issue.

I'm puzzled why it would start spontaneously on two different machines -- I'll check it out though. . .

Re: ACT! 17 Quit Working

An update to Antivirus/Firewall software will do it.  Look in the event viewer and the Act! logviewer for more information.

Re: ACT! 17 Quit Working

I have the same problem with ESET disabled (both antivirus & firewall). . .

Re: ACT! 17 Quit Working

Just because you disable it doesn't mean that it isn't doing anything.  Even when they are disabled antivirus and firewall applications still provide some protection.  The only way to know for sure is to uninstall it but you shouldn't have to do that.  Just have it log what it is doing.

Here are an outgoing connection (Fiddler) that fails when  when ACT! hangs:

GET http://sageact.sageconnectedservices.com/settings/16/ConnectedServicesSettings.en-US.xml HTTP/1.1
Host: sageact.sageconnectedservices.com
Proxy-Connection: Keep-Alive

HTTP/1.1 502 Fiddler - Connection Failed
Date: Thu, 11 Feb 2016 21:35:41 GMT
Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8
Connection: close
Cache-Control: no-cache, must-revalidate
Timestamp: 16:35:41.757

[Fiddler] The connection to 'sageact.sageconnectedservices.com' failed. <br />Error: TimedOut (0x274c). <br />System.Net.Sockets.SocketException A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 54.235.159.97:80

Don't know why it asks for Sage. . . that said, all ports are available to ACT! through ESET Firewall. . .
