A contact won't link to company that was created from it.

I've done a search but couldn't find the right answer so here goes:

 

I have taken over the database where only contacts were created, not companies. I have started to tidy up the database by creating the company from the contact. I link the contact but when I view the contact list, the company name isn't underscored like all the new contacts that I have created subsequently from the company screen. The original contact is shown in the contact screen of the company and is underscored, thus allowing me to click and go to the contact but not the other way around (when in the contact list screen). When in the original contact screen, the company field button is greyed out unlike the new contacts that I have created.

 

Please help as I am going mad.

If you go to Help/About ACT!, what version and build are you using?
