Sales Stages Disappear

Hi all
My company has been using ACT for a while.  I  came on board about 2 years ago and have slowly been familiarizing myself with it.  Mostly I've figured out that the program isn't used to its full advantage and I have been trying to solve that problem, thanks to the help of Act! 6 for Dummies
 
This week's goals have been to associate some of the sales with groups (mission:  accomplished!) and also to create/use the sales stages or sales process within Act.  Unfortunately, every time I modify the sales stages, then close ACT, they disappear, and I wind up typing them in again.  When I click the "modify the sales stages", the only stage in there is 199XXXXXXXX  XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.  Seriously...X's. 
 
Any ideas?   Thoughts?  Hints? 
 
Just FYI: 
ACT build is 6.0.0.679
There are two people here (myself & Pam) who use ACT on a network.  We occasionally have problems, if we are both working in ACT at the same time, that the program bounces one or the other of us back to the 1st contact in the database.

You are the BEST!  It worked!   Not just once but twice, because the first time I gave the new database an assinine name like Fix It -- ha ha!!  I'm so so happy.  Thank you!!

You should definately also update to the 6.0.3 patch. It should resolve the jumping of contacts... and prevent database damage.
