Act 6.0 Freeze

Hi all

We have Act running on 22 windows xp, and database is on server running windows server 2000

act freeze now and then and everyone has to exit using task manager to reconnect

there is no disconnection from server as mails and other files are also hosted on server

the database is around 60 mb, we have another database of 39mb and it never had this freezing issue

can anyone suggest me any ways to avoid this freeze issue

i would also like to know that upgrading to act 2009 or 2010 fix this issue and how to convert the database to new oen successfullly

Thanks & regards

Re: Act 6.0 Freeze

  • When it freezes, ALL users freeze?
  • Does the Task Manager on the server or any user machine show ACT! as busy?
  • Anything in any of the Windows Event Logs when this happens (esp server)?
  • Any specific function tends to cause it?
  • Do you Compress/Reindex regularly?  On a database of that size, I'd recommend doing it nightly with an automated tool like AutoAdmin
  • Make sure you have ACT! 6.03 and have turned off Opportunistic Record Locking (server and workstations)
  • Try a database repair with ACTDIAG

ACT! 2009/2010 are better at handling larger databases, but you'll need to upgrade your server as they don't support Windows 2000

Re: Act 6.0 Freeze

Does this happen when you open the Notes/History tab? Or move to a new contact record with the Notes/History tab open?

My answers to your questions in order

all users act freeze..there will be a white window in all computers (act window)

there is no record in event viewer (checked application and system)

not sure about any specific function

we do a compress in two months..will give a try using the tool you specified

we have the act build 6.0.0.679

done act database maintenace (run from file administration ---> database maintenace) is it the same thing that we do on actdiag

"Doing Opportunistic Locking will create any other problems for other files like mail files and other documents"

Re: Act 6.0 Freeze

Disabled opportunistic locking and also updated to act 6.0.3 on all pc's

did not disable opportunistic locking on server

will disabling this have any effect on other sides.

Re: Act 6.0 Freeze

Disabling opportunistic locking locally doesn't really do much, the main oriblem happens at the server. For what it's worth, versions of the ACT! program after ACT! 6 using the SQL database engine aren't affected by the setting of opportunistic locking, another good reason to upgrade.

Re: Act 6.0 Freeze

In ACT! 6 it went by the number of users logged in, the later versions are by named user so when the license limit is reached, additional users can't be activated.
