ACT 6 crashing! :(

[ Edited ]

Hi,

I was hoping to get some help because I am at my wits end with this problem! We recently installed some new servers in our office and we moved our database files to a new comon share folder on the network so that everyone can access the DB at once from their own respective computer. Well,  everyone has begun to experience random crashing in ACT, anywhere in the DB. The gist of the error is "fatal error", and then crashes.

Any ideas or clues? Please help!

Thanks in advance!

Re: ACT 6 crashing! :(

Is opportunistic locking turned off on the server?

Re: ACT 6 crashing! :(

Hi Roy,

I checked the registry settings on the server:

"EnableOpLock" is set 0

and i just changed "EnableOpLockForceClose" to 0

Do you think the "EnableOpLockForceClose" could have been causing this issue?

Re: ACT 6 crashing! :(

Hard to say but what you described sounded like the old opportunistic locking database corruption. The ACT! 6 database is made up of a set of files that needed to be updated concurrently. Opportunistic locking, in a multiuser environment would not do that, it chose when the individual disk files got updated. Eliminating the multi file structure was one of the advantages of moving the ACT! program to a SQL database engine.

Great, thank you for the information. I wont be able to restart the servers. But no one has a reported a crash yet!

Thanks! Ill post once I confirm through tomorrow whether the changes were a success!

Re: ACT 6 crashing! :(

There are actually three reg keys as per this ACT! Knowledge Base article -

http://kb.sagesoftwareonline.com/cgi-bin/sagesoftwareonline.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1067...

And, it's only applied after a reboot

If it was OpsLocks, you should also use ACTDIAG to do a database repair as these crashes can leave damage in the database that you might not notice ... but they can get worse till the database is unusable
