move from single server to multiple server setup

[ Edited ]

Apologies if this has been covered before, but I am unable to find any documentation describing how to accomplish the following:

I wish to move my Act v16 database from a single server installation to a multiple server installation - e.g. I want to move from the SQL express that was installed on my act "server" to a full copy of SQL server installed on a different computer.

- Is there any documentation describing how to make this move?

- Where do I specify the SQL server instance my Act database uses?

- Is there a way to verify what database server my act installation is actually using?

- Can I rename my database during the migration?

Any advice, help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

keywords: multiple servers, upgrade sql express to sql server

Re: move from single server to multiple server setup

If using full SQL then you must name the instance ACT7 and you also must have Act! installed on that machine as well. So in reality it's not installed on a multiple server instance but Act! on the SQL server is only used for the connection to the database, storing the files and using Act! scheduler for automatic backups and maintenance.

This may help on creating the instance http://kb.act.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27039

Users just connect the the server where SQL is installed and Act! via the network.

Not sure if you know but the licensing is changing and the version you are using wont be able to be registered after 31st December  https://www.act.com/important-notice

Thanks Chris,

Your explanation makes it clear how Act behaves with the database server, and I can arrange things appropriately now.

Much appreciated.

And yes, I am aware of the licensing is changing.  Thanks for making sure.
