Re: how to backup act database via the command line

actdiag, really not a good program.

that this is the best act can do for command line backups?

when backing up using the act program, a .zip file is created with a unique file name.

when using actdiag, a non-compressed file is created, always with the same file name.

that means now my script will have to compress and rename that backup file.

thanks,

Forgive me for asking but why do you not use the automated backup Scheduler that comes with ACT and then backup the zip file it creates? This is how almost all of my clients backup to internal backup system or to off site disaster recovery.

Re: how to backup act database via the command line

hi,
yes, that is what i have been doing, but was looking for a command line way to create that zip.
makes writing a script easier, as i need to upload to cloud.

as of now, that automated backup is not working reliably, had a level one tech remote in and could not fix it. waiting, as is write, for a specialist to get it working.
thanks

If it works with manual backup but not from Scheduler it is often permissions of where you are saving it if not on the local machine. You can change the windows user under Services to a network administrator user that often fixes this. (Ignore this post if it fails on the local drive as well.)

thanks,
i am going to use the scheduler and then run a .cmd script task at a set time after that backup would have completed.
i just found out that the .zip file is not password protected and the data is not encrypted.
that the attachments can be viewed by anyone.

really, very shocking.
so what is the point of a password if it does not protect my valuable data.

seem that i will have to zip the zip to get an encrypted zip....

thanks,
david

The following examples show how to run database maintenance tasks from a command line.

  • Attach <database name> <complete adf file path> [optional-<complete alf file path>]-attaches database with or without log file.
    • Example: Attach ActDemo c:\databases\ActDemo.adf
  • Backup  – backs up the database.
    • Example: Backup ActDemo c:\Temp\Mybackups
  • Check – checks database for errors.
