This is strange.
I can add a new Contact, all fields get saved except for the Contact Name (Contact). I enter some thing, hit save and come back and its gone...but every other info on the Contact Details page (Company, title, department etc etc) get saved.

Restart ACT and then re-index the database.
I had a similar (not exact) situation where every time I tried to create a new contact with the "Duplicate Contact" feature, it failed to save the record.
After I restarted ACT and re-indexed, it seemed to work fine.
Also, before saving, try clicking on the "..." at the end of the Contact Field to see if ACT is correctly interpreting the name structure.
You may find that adjustments in this dialog box may also do the trick.
