Noted a thread which suggested using an addon by a group called CRMADDON (http://www.crmaddon.com/). Have attempted a few times to trial install the TAPI.NET product they have on offer. Can't say I got very far with the install / set up. Not sure if it my problem, or a problem with the software.
Questions, should I persevere with this product or can someone suggest another addon program so i can place calls within ACT using Skype. It would also be great if ACT could also track the calls via History.

itTAPI.Net is the only product I'm aware of that will do this.
As you're in Australia, I have asked one of the local ACT! Consultants to give you a call on this. If you haven't heard from them by Tuesday, please let me know and I'll follow up with them.

I have just tried downloading and installing this program for ACT Premium. I have not been able to get it to work either. There is a new button / word on my toolbar that says CRMADDONTAPI but when I press on it nothing happens, but I understand this is where you need to configure the program.

What version of ACT!?
Under the ACT! Tools menu, do you have an option for CRMAddon? If so, from it, select Dial and then Config

It's probably worth mentioning that if you have Skype set up you can dial from ACT! without any additional software.
Create a new field called Skype. Make it a URL field with a default value of "callto://" (without the quotes).
Now when you enter a phone number copy and paste it into to the Skype filed after the callto:// bit, so the whole thing should look like this:
Now providing Skype is already open, you can just click on the hyperlink and Skype will dial the number.
It doesn't do anything fancy like automatically recording history, but it will make the call.

I followed your instructions but the only thing that ACT! 11 will do is to open a web page instead of place a call. When I put the "callto://" (minus quotes) in the Define - field, I get the above. If I input "callto" in Field Format (Just to see if that would make it work), it doesn't help either (so that we won't have to cover that). When I add the "open program" feature, it opens SKYPE but doesn't place a call. I notice that within SKYPE there is a place to give persmissions as to what programs are allowed to work with SKYPE. However, I have no idea how to give it permission to use ACT!
I am using - ACT11
Skype - 184.108.40.206
Windows XP Pro
So that I don't cross-post, I hope that the ACT! developers have added SKYPE integration to it's list of "must-haves". This one bit of functionality saves tons of time. The best option would be to create a button to the right of the existing PHONE field just like SKYPE uses on a web page. That way all one needs to do is click the button to initiate a call. Voila!

Just to clarify. You dont need to put anything in the Field Format box. The "callto://" goes in the Default Value box. Now, when you create a new contact record you should have "callto://" (without the quotes) in your Skype url field. It should also appear as a hyperlink; i.e. in blue and underlined. If it's not there the field is not yet set up correctly.
You then type the full phone number, including +country code directly after the //. So you should have something like: callto://+44123456789. When you click this hyperlink Skype should fire up.
There's a short video running through the process here
