Upgrade & Move Suggestions??

We have v16 Pro running on Windows 2008 server with SQL Express 2008

I'm moving to V21 Premium to Windows 2016 server. [& have to complete this before year end]

Per the instructions, SQL Express 2014 will be installed.

  • Should I apply SP2 for SQL?
  • Should I install the new version & restore from the old version?
  • Or should I move the old version & then upgrade?

If I recall correctly the client needs to be on the server where the DB is?

Considering putting this on a virtual server, any caveats?

New system cores are 3.8ghz (turbo 4.2)& plenty of RAM.

Re: Upgrade & Move Suggestions??

So per the IIS 32bit requirements, it would be better to put this on it's own server.

What about SQL Express?  Should I install Service Packs?

There's no mention of them on the Compatibility list

It says that SQL Express 2016 is supported for V21. Why should I or not go a later version?

Re: Upgrade & Move Suggestions??

The installation process of Act! Premium web makes the adjustment to meet  with the IIS 32Bit requirement

Remember that you must previously install IIS and add ASP.NET

Forget the previous version of SQL Server, the one you installed, uninstall it and allow the new installation to put the new 2014 Express

The minimum requirements of the Premium V21 version are in  CLICK HERE

The version that you choose of SQL server depends on the scenario you have in the operating system of the server and the users' computers

if all with SQL Server 2016 support ... then that may be the option, but I suggest install  all with the version that comes with the installation file of Act! ... since this way you will not have to manually create the instance

Before any step, I suggest you back up your database and place a copy of that ZIP file on a USB drive or external disk for more security

Re: Upgrade & Move Suggestions??

Ok, new plan?

  1. Backup old Version
  2. Install new version on new server with update 4
  3. "restore as" old db to new version

Does that plan work?

  1. Once upgraded to new server & version
  2. Upgrade clients & point to new server
