System requirements to upgrade publisher computer

[ Edited ]

We have ACT Premium ver 2011 on a laptop as the publisher with 3 RDB that we sync to. We need to replace the laptopWould a tower pc  be a better choice than a laptop to use as the serverWould windows professional os be better than a home edition? (Assuming Win 7 would be on the new pc?) Thank you- Judy

Judy

The remote user would have the Outlook sync set up on her remote machine, then sync attachments, contacts, activities to the publisher. Best to set up the sync on only machine, assuming she is using the same email account in Outlook on both machines.

Re: System requirements to upgrade publisher computer

Hello Judy,
It's usually better to have a fixed machine for the server instead of a mobile one, to ensure stable connectivity. A Windows Home machine should be okay for the publisher, but if you plan on using the ACT! for Web option, you will need a Pro or higher version of Windows. You may also want to take a look at the following KB article on retaining sync when moving a Publisher database to another machine:

Re: System requirements to upgrade publisher computer

He Greig,

Thank you very much, that article is exactly what we need. I think we'll have to set up all MS office and Hamachi that we use for syncs, and then move the database.

I have an additional question :We have 4 licensed users, 1 uses ACT on the publisherand the other 3 are RDB users. The publisher 'user1', has her outlook mail attached to the publisher machine and ACT.   Can the publisher user1 also have her Outlook on a laptop, and sync into the publisher? I'm confused how she can use Outlook and retain all emails in both machines. (I am fairly certain the email server deletes emails once downloaded into Outlook).

Thank you. Judy
