Snyching via a VPN with Act Premium 2008

Hi

I have done a search but can't seem to find anything to simplify the above and I am starting to panic (sorry if the solution is right in front of me and i've missed it).

I have ACT Premium on 2 computers in my office linked peer to peer.  I have set up a Hamachi VPN to sync with our sales guy's laptop (based off site), is there a guide anywhere that could show me how to do it, or would anyone mind talking me through it step by step?

I'd be really grateful for any advice

Thanks in advance

Kate

Just to update this.  Thanks for all your help, I read all the articles and in the end I admitted defeat (I know my own limitations!) and got a company who specialise in ACT to help me.  It was all done within 15 minutes remotely.  Now working fine.

Thanks again for all your help.

Re: Snyching via a VPN with Act Premium 2008

Hello Kate,

I would recommend syncing over the internet rather then through a VPNThe reason being is that the sync process could be longer then normal and possibly run into timeout issuesThese issues could occur because of how VPN connection places overhead on packets being sent/received.

There are two methods to sync over the internet:

  • Network Sync over the Internet
  • Internet Sync

With network sync over the internet, you would install our network sync service and setup port forwarding in our routerThe other option, internet sync, will utilize IIS for syncingIn the end, both methods accomplish the same task.

If syncing via internet is not an option, then setting up normal network sync would be best practice.

Below, I've linked Knowledge Bases articles to all methods listed above.

How to Setup Network Synchronization in ACT!

How To Use the ACT! Network Sync Service Across the Internet
How to Setup Internet Synchronization in ACT!

Thanks.

Re: Snyching via a VPN with Act Premium 2008

Yeah, we had a *wonderful* time getting this set up.  Same situation as yours.  We looked at a VPN option, but found a less expensive and very fuctional option.  My server database sits on my work laptop and my remote salesguy syncs over the internet via the "network sync" function.  Since my server laptop sits behind a router, firewall, and a dynamic IP from comcomcast, I needed a static IP option that pointed to my laptop.  I am using www.dns2go.com.  The will give you an url and and an IP that points to your computer.  You may alos need to open up some ports on your firewall and make sure your router has a permanent/reserved IP assigned to your server computer.  I think the ports I needed to open were:   80, 23, 65100.  Our sync server address is the IP that dns2go assigns us.

Re: Snyching via a VPN with Act Premium 2008

Thanks all for your help - I am really grateful for your replies.

Mike and DLunceford, I am off to read those articles now - thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I decided to go for a VPN after I tried to sync with the laptop over the internet and an error message popped up.  I'm not too sure about IP addresses and ports and thought that a VPN might be an easier option (as you may have guessed i'm not technically minded, but i'm willing to have a try!).

Thanks again

Kate,

We're you able to it set up through your VPN?  If so, which link helped you get it done?

Thank you,

Re: Snyching via a VPN with Act Premium 2008

Sync ing over the internet without the protection of a VPN has my technical guys worried.   Can anyone tell me what the practical risks are with leaving a port open on our firewall which points to a server where the Act sync software is running as a service?
