We recently switched over to ACT! 2011 and have one person using a laptop with a remote database. When we first set it up, it was synching fine, but now we seem to be having issues. Every time we try it says "The SQL Database instance is unavailable. Contact your administrator for assistance." I have followed the steps to make sure the Protocols for ACT7 are enabled, and everything seems to be working fine. The SQL server says it is started. Any suggestions on what else to do?

I would take a look at the windows firewall, or any antivirus firewall you maybe running.
Then add exceptions for sqlserver.exe and the browser as well. Below is the path to the files if you installed SQL on your c drive
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL##_##.ACT7\MSSQL\Binn.
You can also get more info from this KB Using your Anti-Virus/Firewall Software with ACT! by Sage
Let me know how it goes

I need more information from you, which version of ACT! are you running, What version of windows, are you running any kind of virus protection, and if so does it have a firewall built in?
What version of windows are you running?
If you running windows XP please click on start then run, in the run box type services.msc, if you're running vista or windows 7 just type it in the search box, when the services come up is look for SQL Server (ACT7) is it started?

I am running:
ACT 2012 Pro SP1 (just downloaded and installed from the Sage site) I purchased full versions but have not gotten the serials yet.
The database is from ACT 2009 Premiun what has been downgraded and moved from a different system. Computer 1 (the Host) is working just fine, Computer 2 (the remote, in the same domain on the same LAN)
Both computers are both brand new Windows 7 64bit with no previous copies of ACT.
SQL Server (ACT7) is it started on both systems
Thank you for your help!

What exactly are you trying to do, Synch a database?
What is the exact error message you are getting?

So you're not trying to sync?
Are you trying to share a database across the network?
Can you open the demo database or create a new database on the second machine?
And if you have a error message that would help me a great deal

No I am not Syncing.
No error message on the local ACT Demo data base on Computer 2 and I can open the demo database of computer 1 on computer 2. I never opened the demo database on computer 1 with computer 1.
This is really fustrating, it should work.
