Object Reference not set to an instance of an object error when scheduling activities

We're seeing this "Object reference" error when trying to schdule activities for other users. Steps to reproduce:

1. Right click in Activities tab window, select Schedule, Call...

2. Click Schedule For button - the error dialog appears.

Click OK to clear the dialog and the Schedule This Activity For dropdown is empty.

Very strangely, the error only appears if the user is an Administrator or Manager. Standard users can schedule activities for other users with no problem.

Hi Mike,

One of our computers is having the exact same issue, except he already has ACT! 2008 Premium (10.0.3).

I read the instructions on how to fix this issue, but it applies to 2005 and 2006 versions.

And I tried going to Tools->Database Maintenance->Remove old data, but there's a catch: the owner of the database wants to keep ALL of these activities; he doesn't want them purged. He wants to keep track of every activity.

Please help.

Thanks,

Celeste

Re: Object Reference not set to an instance of an object error when scheduling activities

Try rebuilding your preferences.

  1. Go to Start and select Run
  2. Type in %appdata% and click Ok.
  3. Once the folder comes up, navigate down to the following folder \ACT\ACT for Windows <version>
For Vista: \Roaming\ACT\ACT for Windows <version>
  4. Delete the following files if present: preferencesBak.XML, preferencesBak3.xml, preferencesBak6.xml, preferencesBak9.xml
  5. Open the Preferences folder and delete USPreferences206.xml and USPrefrences208.xml.old

David,

Your solution looks similar to the word processor issue. We have yet to test this procedure today to fix the defaulting of ACT word processor.

But will it also fix the scheduling activity "object reference... instance" error?

Thanks,

Celeste

Yes, this can fix the activities issue.

Re: Object Reference not set to an instance of an object error when scheduling activities

It seems like the solution fixed the template issue, but not the activities. We are still getting the error message, "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." We even ran actdiag to check, reindex, repair the db.

Please help.

When are you getting the object reference error?  Is it the same as the original poster when clicking 'Schedule For'?

Yes. When hitting the "Schedule For" button, the object error message pops up and then clicking ok, will open "Schedule For" window, but the drop-down list is empty.

Do you get the same issue in the demo database?
