Move from SQL Express to MS SQL 2005 Enterprise

Hi there,

I'm currently implementing a Load-Balanced Terminal Server environment for one of my clients, and I've run into a hurdle with this one particular client who is still using ACT!.

The issue that I am having, is finding away, if possibe, to move the database from a MS SQL Express environment to their new MS SQL 2005 environment?

Since MS SQL Express is a cut down version of MS SQL 2005, but essentially functions very similarly, I would have thought that it would not be too much of an issue with regards to moving them.  Is that correct?

Am I correct in saying that I coud possibly perform a backup and then restore to the new SQL server?  And then modify all the file pointers that ACT! uses to point to the new database server?

Regards,

D

Re: Move from SQL Express to MS SQL 2005 Enterprise

Here is what you can do:

1) Manually create an ACT7 instance on your SQL Server 2005 Enterprise server.  You can follow ACT! KB Article #19231 to do so.

2) Install ACT! on this machine.

3) On the prior machine, create a backup of your database.

4) Copy the backup to the new server.

5) Restore the database on the new server.

6) Point your client machines to the new SQL Enterprise server to make connection.

That should be the easiest method to accomplish what you are wanting to do.

Hope this is helpful.

thanks

Re: Move from SQL Express to MS SQL 2005 Enterprise

What version of ACT! are they using?  Do a Help|About and post the version information.

Are you looking to simply have the ACT! Clients point @ this new SQL Enterprise server which hosts the database, or are you OK with installing @ on this new SQL Enterprise server?

thanks

Hi there,

Yes, I want to have them point to this new database server.  I also want to MOVE the existing database to this server as well.
