Mail merge -- garbbled fields when added

I just upgraded to 2010 from 2009.


I am creating an email template and want to add some contact mail merge fields. I can add almost all fields, except when I tried to add a saluation" or my user defined field called DBA (which the abbreviation for a company's name -- like Sun instead of saying Sun Microsystems) - junk characters get added to the email.

This is what I get when I try to add the DBA field: 


ALL other field adds fine (I haven't tried all of them). The Saluation and DBA fields are frequently used - so it is critical I am able to add these.

Please help.
