is there any way to write a letter (using a template) or a mail merge using just COMPANY information? My company would like to send out a general promotion mailing to some companies that we don't yet have contact info for.
I tried creating a lookup by company and that worked ok. But I keep getting an error message saying that I need to have contacts to write the letter - Even if the letter doesn't have the contact field in it.

Unfortunately, this isn't a feature built in ACT!. Templates will only pull contact information.
I'm sure this capability is provided through an addon product, but I cannot recall any specifically. Check out the following websites to see some of the available addon products.

I think the issue is that letters are sent to a person, not a company.
You could create the contacts from the companies without a contact name and do a template for them
