My question pertains to the Status/ID pull down tab. How do I make this field or another field that will put a contact into our existing "Customer" group, or the appropriate group. I had assumed that that was the purpose of the Statud/ID field, but we have found that is not the case.

Have a look in the help for: Group Membership Rules
That allows you to use a query to automatically add/remove Contacts from a Group based on field data
