Issues Importing Contacts

Hope everyone had a great New Years.


The Thursday before New Years we were importing 225,000 contacts from one ACT database to another ACT database, everything was going well before the computer went to sleep 10 hours into it (it imported about 140,000 contacts). Since coming back from our little break here we are trying to complete that same task but we are experiencing some slight issues.


One database has 225,000 contacts, the other has 3,100. We have the ACT duplicate checker on and it is matching based on DUNS Number. Everything is set up the same way but it keeps stopping the import after 6,000-10,000 contacts (changes every time) and says that the import has been completed. We are doing it this way so that the data from the 225,000 "wins" and overrides the data in the 3,100.


We've ran the database maintenance on both databases and still no results. Thoughts?

Hello George,
It may be that importing 225,000 contacts may be too much of a load on ACT! or your machine. If possible, can you instead import the 3,100 contacts from the other database into the larger one? If you are not going to be using the larger one, then you can just backup that database, then go to File > Restore > Database, and use the Restore As option to restore it under the desired name.

Another option would be to export it in smaller chunks. You would lookup a group of the contacts (like 5,000 -10,000 at a time), then use the Export function from the target database and choose Current Lookup. This will only work if exporting Contacts only - Groups, Companies, etc would have to be exported separately.

ACT, unfortunately, can't really handle large imports. In the past I had a 90k contacts to import and broke them into batches of 10k. Each 10k batch took 45-60 minutes.


My tool of choice is Oakmerge.  It's much more effecient and Alan Lee and the staff are very helpful and quick to respond to whatever questions you have. Here's the website:
