Installing Act! 2010 Premium on an existing SQL Server 2008 instance

Hi,

I would like to know how to install Act! 2010 Premium for an existing SQL Server 2008 instance (Standard Edition).

The only thing I seem to have dug up is how to install Act! 2010 on a new SQL Server instance, which must have an instance name of ACT7.

Otherwise, I would like to know if there is a proper installation guide for IT Administrators.

TIA

ACT! will not recognize a SQL installation unless it has an instance name of ACT7.  This is by design.  It sounds like you have found the KB article on how to properly install a new SQL Server instance just for ACT!.  Naming it is not the only issue - there are other settings that have to be followed.  Because ACT! will re-set the sa password to secure the instance, the ACT7 instance will be used only by ACT!  Since you won't have access to the sa password, you'll want to make sure you setup and use the ACT! Scheduler to backup the database according to a schedule, and your own backup procedure will then backup the backup produced by the ACT! Schduler.  If you insist on having your backup procedure backup the ACT! database and supplemental files directly, there are several KB articles on ways to stop the SQL service for the ACT! instance so that the files are released.  Good luck.

Wow!!!

What a surprise!

How pathetic for a modern piece of software... "Let's lock you in of doing things our way, so you can't leverage your existing SQL Server infrastructure and/or skillset."

Thank you very much for that!

So to then, if you do go down the route of installing an ACT7 instance, can you:

1. Install an SQL SE instance of ACT7 on the Windows Server computer.

2. Install Act 2010 Premium on your Windows 7 clients to use thatserver based SQL Server instance.

Or do you have to:

1. Install an SQL SE instance of ACT7 on the Windows Server computer.

2. Install Act 2010 Premium on the Windows Server computer.

3. Configure / set up Act! 2010 Premium on that Windows Server computer.

4. Install Act 2010 Premium on your Windows 7 clients to use that server based install.

Again, TIA.

Re: Installing Act! 2010 Premium on an existing SQL Server 2008 instance

In ACT! 2010 and earlier, the installation process installs both SQL and then ACT!, in that order.  Since they appear separately in the Control Panel, you could, following installation, uninstall ACT! on the server.  But, and it's a big BUT, you wouldn't be able to create any new databases, or use all of the tools in ACT!DIAG.EXE (the diganostic tool that installs with ACT!).  That's because ACT! can only create local databases on it's own drives and ACTDIAG.EXE can only act upon local databases.  ACT! Scheduler is not a separate install, so it would uninstall with ACT!, leaving you with no backup and maintenance scheduler.  I'm probably forgetting other issues that result when you uninstall ACT!, but trust me, you don't want to do that.

In ACT! 2011, as part of the installation process, we now have the option of not installing SQL, but that's only for clients, not the server.

Re: Installing Act! 2010 Premium on an existing SQL Server 2008 instance

Hello TIA,

Welcome to the ACT! Online Community. The ACT7 instance is a secure instance of SQL used by ACT!...this is part of our license agreement with Microsoft. If you would like to manually create the ACT7 instance for your existing SQL Server 2008 Standard, then please see the instructions in Knowledgebase Article 25227.

You would create the ACT7 instance on the server, install ACT! 2010 on the server, and then install ACT! 2010 and SQL 2008 Express on the client stations.

Note: Effective 6/1/13, Sage no longers provides support for the Act! software. This is now provided by Swiftpage.

Or we could say that the glass is Half full and realize that this design decision keeps us from inadvertantly destroying our Act! database when we log into the SQL Management Console as SA and start twiddling knobs...
