How can I import a leads list from a tradeshow, etc. into Act without filling new contact records for each? My fields in the immediate list I want to bring into Act are contact name, email, phone, and co. name.

I am not an expert but This is just an idea...
First backup your database including attachments, and place a copy of that ZIP file on a USB memory for more security - Keep the User and Password of the database administrator user in a safe place
It is recommended that you first test in the DEMO database
1. Open the contact list (List view )
2. Select the same fields you have to import
Then export that list to excel (after that... Excel is minimized)
You only need the names of the columns
Save the excel list at computer desktop and close excel
Then use the import function of Act!

If you do this a lot, you may want to set up an automated process. this can be done with an add in called OakMerge. We use it every day. Fewer steps, more intuitive, more options for now overwriting your data.

I think you are asking how to import information without creating duplicates if already in the database. I would also suggest that when you import you add a field on data source or referred by so you know where the records came from.
Please use the link below and take special notice of the bit marked = How do I use the Replace, Swap, and Copy options in Act!?
Never select Typical when given the option when importing into ACT = Typical or Custom always = Custom
Lastly but very important make sure your de-duplicating fields are going to be pertinent to both the data in the database and the imported data so that it can recognise matching data and that de-duplicating is turned on.
