Import from Excel - No Map

Import from Excel - No Map

I have followed the directions for importing a txt file.  I walk through the wizard and get to screen 6 where I should be able to map.  Nothing appears.  The reset button is greyed out.  A map file I saved, it will not let me load.  How do I get a map to appear so I can finish the import?

Hard to say without more information. Do you have the actual text file closed, you won't be able to import if the file is open at the same time you are trying to open it.

I would also suggest saving your text file as a .csv file instead. See how that goes.

Re: Import from Excel - No Map

I have made sure the document is closed before trying the import.  I have tried saving as a CSV file as well.  The import the first record is shut off as a default, but I tried it both ways just in case.  I have shut down and restarted.  I'm runnning Excel 2007 with Windows XP, ACT Premium 2008.  I have posted this with another person who has had similar problems so if this is a duplicate, I apologize.  I'm desperate to get this functioning again.

This can be a bit flaky. If you are currently importing as a csv file, try saving the Excel data as Text (Tab Delimited) then importing it in to ACT (select TAB in the wizard). Usually works if csv is a problem.

Re: Import from Excel - No Map

I originally did try as a txt file and then as a CSV.  I've shut the server down, reset the SQL instance (another contributor thought that would work).  I even tried uploading a file I had already imported (which was a txt) and got same result in the wizard - no map.  It does not recognize a map I had saved from a previous import.  Extremely frustrating.

Try creating a simple 5 row excel file with just Contact, Company, Address 1,and City columns and some made up data and see if that works. If it does it suggests there might be a problem with your spreadsheet, and I would run a clean-up macro to remove bad characters before trying again.

It might also be worth trying to import the file into the demo database. If that works but the other one doesn't it could well be database specific, in which case hit it with all the fixes and rebuids in ACT Diag (I presume you've already done this) and try again. If that doesn't work you might be looking a database rebuild - create an empty copy of your database then import your old one into the new one. this has worked for me in the past.

Oh its definatly a bit flakey -- doing this,

Make a DB that will be used as a test and try it multiple times - then use your good DB

Re: Import from Excel - No Map

Thank you for your suggestion.  I did try a simple 5 line excel as suggested.  It did not work.  I no longer have the demo database available, but did try a much smaller one I do have.  It worked on that so apparently something is wrong with our main database.  Your next suggestion was to do all the fixes and repairs in ACTdiag.  Do you know where I get a list of these?  I run regular maintenance on this database through the drop down in ACT, but don't use ACTDiag except to get to reports to see how the syncing is going.

You can find the procedure for doing this here Database Rebuild and Repair Procedures

Do a backup first!
