How to setup Windows Firewall to allow ACT! 11 Internet Sync from remote db?
My router must open port 80 for internet sync to work. I would like to enable Windows Firewall or some other software firewall. However, I cannot figure out how to turn on the firewall and still pass the sync. Currently, the firewall must be off.
Suggestions in the ACT kb do not work.
For example: "Troubleshooting Internet Synchronization in ACT!"
Thanks in advance. - mike

These are the firewall exceptions that I use.
This KB article gives a more detailed description of the process: http://tinyurl.com/62ysy9

Are you sure you're talking about Internet Sync? This is only in the Premium version
You should probably look at Application sync. See this ACT! Knowledge Base article - How To Set Up Application Synchronization in ACT!

Jeff_Granger and David Lunceford's suggestions did not work. After including all these exceptions to Windows Firewall, the situation is the same - I can sync from the Remote when the Publisher is set with Windows Firewall OFF, but not ON.
The Remote is a laptop that is connecting wireless through the same router as the Publisher, which is wired. Could the fact that they are on the same network be a problem?
And yes, I have ACT! 11 Premium on all machines.
Thanks, - mike

I'm still not clear what method of synchronisation you are trying to use.
Essentially you have three options:
1. Network Sync - this is the "usual" option with ACT Premium where you use the ACT! Network Sync Service on the Publisher machine to handle incoming sync requests.
2. Application Sync - Network sync service in not running (or not available in the Standard version of ACT), but you check "Accept Incoming Syncs" under Tools > Synchronise in ACT!
3. Internet Sync - Used typically when the subscriber computer is at a remote location and there's no VPN link.
As you describe running the sync over a wifi connection I suspect you have set up either Network Sync or Application Sync, but could you confirm which as it would help trying to resolve your problem.

I have ACT! 11 Premium on all machines. This is an new, upgrade from Act 6. I am using internet sync on two computers only - a desktop Publisher, and a laptop Remote - in order to debug the installation . They are currently at the same location for convenience while completing this test installation, and currently the laptop is connected wirelessly to the same network as the Publisher. But normally the laptop will be on the road. A VPN network does not exist.
My goal is that all remote computers will sync ACT! sync via the internet. Since all local computers except the Publisher are laptops that are only local temporarily, during the time they are local they will continue to sync via the internet.
Does this clarify the situation?

Have you set up the Internet Sync? It should use Port 80 by default unless you change it as per this ACT! Knowledge Base article:

I gave up on Internet Sync. I never got it to work. Instead I discovered that Network Sync will work over the internet. It was simple to set up and works well.
It's a shame that ACT doesn't make it clear that Network Sync will work perfectly well over the internet, rather than just locally as the title "Network (inside of a firewall)"implies.

Mike, the instructions to do this are listed in this ACT! Knowledge Base article -
Network sync can require additional thought to keep it secure when on the internet, unless also using a VPN
