This was a timely post that helped me also - thankyou.
As a follow-on question, if I create such a (down-sized) database copy from the local 'remote' database on my laptop, can this new database be used as a 'main' or 'stand-alone' database when copied to another laptop?

Ah, thanks but maybe you missed my point (or maybe I'm missing yours). I don't want the whole database on the second laptop. I want to create a very small subset of my large database for another user (who must NOT have access to the whole database) and I don't have the option to hook him to a network and manage him via sync sets. And for simplicity, i want to start from my large 'remote' database. The new small database would then remain one-user.
Does this work?

OK, I understand now. Sorry - I missed the point about how to actually get the small database across to the second machine.
Thanks for your help.
