We're looking to start a life insurance business and use ACT via the web. We're trying to creat a virtual office where all of our data is stored on someone else's server. Basically, 2 guys, 2 laptops, and 2 blackberrys. We want to be completely mobile.
Is it possible to install ACT on a server with a webstie hosting company like siteground?
Siteground offers file storage, email, website hosting, but I'm not sure if they can handle ACT.
There are a number of sites the specialise in ACT! hosting, and this might be a better solution for you.... they can set up web or sync for the laptop users. I'd recommend getting Handheld Contact for the Blackberry users.
The issue with a generic hosting company is that they need to have a machine running ACT! and know how to set it up effeciently.
I support your idea of completely being mobile, however...
Most of the people that I am aware of, will either choose to have to a) laptops with a sync procedure or b) to have a server of their own where they login. Most of the time this server is residing on one of the sites where a one of you is working. This person, while working from office will have high speed access to the database, where the other one will be able to VPN into this site.
Surely you will be sending out letters and quotes, and then a local copy of Act will be helpfull in speeding things up...

The reason to outsource this is usually because the user might not have a server or the ability to maintain it.
You can send letters etc with the web version... and if you need local copies or the full client, the users can sync to the hosted copy, again without the need to setting up and maintaining their own server.
