Hosted Act! for web premium recommendations

We want to start using Act! for Web, but hosted externally for between 5-8 users.  We cannot host internally and there will be no local installations of Act! on workstations or syncing.  Only Act! for Web.  I see that there are two ways of doing so:

1)  Use a dedicated Act! hoster such as http://store.rtgroup.com/ACT_Software_Hosting_s/13.htm, http://www.trilogycrm.com/, http://www.active-hosting.com/, or http://actwebhost.com/ .

2)  Use a general web hoster that offers full virtual servers for use like http://blog.rackwire.com/2009/12/setting-up-act-premium-for-web-2010-hyper-v-act-hosting/ .

I understand that option 1 hosts provides specific Act! expertise and support, but are more expensive with setup fees and $35/month/user hosting costs and option 2 hosts will be less expensive, but with no Act specific knowledge.

Here's the question.  Does anyone here have any experiences, good or bad, with specific Act! for Web hosts that they can share?

Thanks.

As an ACT! Hosting Provider, please allow me to respond.  (http://acttrainer.com/hosting)

With the site you mentioned, about $100 a month gets you ONE MINIMAL Server. and there is still a setup fee.  You are on your own as far as support and figuring out what to do next.

With a dedicated ACT! hosting provider, such as ours (http://acttrainer.com/hosting)

You get best of the Best hardware in a top level secure facility

You also get,

  • ACT support for question
  • We do backups
  • Your data is actually on 2 or 3 different servers for security. We do not expose your data directly to the internet.  Rackwire is going to charge you extra for the front end server and data server.
  • No long term committment - pay first and last month and then pay as your go
  • Free training
  • You get us - Call me, I'll talk to you.

Three Different options for hosting; ACT for Web, ACT Premium Sync, and the Full Desktop ACT Premium over Citrix

Test Drive Act! and Quickbooks over Citrix http://GoTryAct.com

Additionally could have remote databases (ACT! Installed on workstations) and synchronize with the main database at your Host provider by Internet from Any Where

Re: Hosted Act! for web premium recommendations

jotero:  We're currently using Act! Premium on the desktop with a single shared DB on the network.  Users want to see changes others have made in near real-time and they probably won't want to sync dozens of times a day.  Smiley Happy

We also want to get away from locally installed Act! on the workstations.  It's a performance sapping hog.  Both myself and end-users can tell a perceptable difference in computer speed from before and after Act! is installed on a workstation.

Re: Hosted Act! for web premium recommendations

Babscoole,

I was getting ready to dig into this myself, so check out a this Hosting Company more cost effective than Rackwire.com when you compare their $67 per month offering 1024GB RAM, or $85 with 2048GB RAM; to 1and1.com's $39 1gb or $59 2GB. to Top it off you can do more things with the server to increase more realtime colaboration with Calanders, email, alerts, all attached files to ACT records will be off site protected and backed-up.

http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/VpsWindows;jsessionid=0F69DC113FF9804552A589848246D794.TCpfix141a?_...

A couple things I learned:

1. You can start with the 2GB VPS to see how ACT performs and drop it down each step very easy and no extra costs (unlike GoDaddys') to see if you need 512MB, 1GB or 2GB RAM to get the lowest price per month and know you can without any setup changes up the memory as the DB grows.  This is the question to work on.

2. You need to install for free on your local workstation a control panel (I think Plesk 9) which allows you to install on the VPS ACT! from your local PC CDROM drive and be able to control all Server Admin setup aspects needed for ACT!

If you beat me to it let me know how it worked out.

This thread is about ACT! for the WEB hosting. That done not appear to be what they provide.

Re: Hosted Act! for web premium recommendations

Roy,

He starts off looking for most cost effective solution and ends with ACT! Hosting which is why I pointed to a third option.

This is not to say there is no real value to a ACT! Web Hosting provider if the company lacks the years of experience using ACT and maintaining it as new versions come out.

Can you confirm what I'm looking at doing will not work given I don't need the ACT! Web Hosting Service Provider to setup and maintain?

Frankly, I think you would be disappointed with the performance and you would need to have ACT! installed on the remote server. I'm not sure what you want but for the prices they charge for a years service you could invest in a dedicated bok to be the ACT! server.
