Using ACTDIAG I disconnected oour active db because the ADF file was locked and could not be backed up. When I attempted to reconnect after the backup (by opening the ADF file from within ACT) it won't reconnect. Error says "This database cannot be opened because the SQLServer verison of this database cannot be identified. Using ACT 2010 Version 12.1.181.0 Hotfix 1.
I'm stuck. Any help appreciated.

That worked - thank you. I did not think to check the verison of ACTDIAG.
